Fish in Tamarind Gravy

A classic Andhra fish curry with a tangy tamarind base.

Ingredients

  • Fish: 500g
  • Tamarind: lemon-sized ball
  • Onion: 1, ground to paste
  • Green Chilies: 3, slit
  • Red Chili Powder: 1.5 tsp
  • Coriander Powder: 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric Powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Oil: 3 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds, Fenugreek seeds: for tempering
  • Salt: to taste

Instructions

    Extract pulp from the tamarind.

    Heat oil, add tempering seeds. Add onion paste and fry until brown.

    Add spice powders and cook for a minute.

    Add tamarind pulp, salt, and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil.

    Gently add the fish pieces and green chilies.

    Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked and gravy has thickened.
