Chepala Pulusu (Fish Curry)

A tangy and spicy fish curry, a staple in Telangana households.

Ingredients

  • Fish: 500g, steaks
  • Tamarind: large lime-sized ball
  • Onions: 1 large, chopped
  • Tomatoes: 1, chopped
  • Green Chilies: 4, slit
  • Ginger-Garlic Paste: 1 tbsp
  • Red Chili Powder: 2 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Fenugreek Seeds: 1/4 tsp
  • Oil: 3 tbsp
  • Salt: to taste

Instructions

    Soak tamarind in hot water and extract a thick pulp.

    Heat oil in a clay pot or wide pan. Add fenugreek seeds.

    Add onions and sauté until translucent.

    Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Fry for a minute.

    Add tomatoes and cook until soft.

    Add chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for a minute.

    Pour in the tamarind pulp and 1-2 cups of water. Bring to a boil.

    Gently slide the fish pieces into the boiling gravy.

    Cook on medium heat for 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked and the gravy thickens. Do not stir too much.
